Services and Groups
The therapists at The Counseling Center are experienced in a variety of techniques and modalities.  By providing a wide range of services, we can help each client develop a unique plan to bring about the changes he or she is looking for.  In addition to traditional individual therapy, couples counseling, and family therapy, we also offer the following:

Voice Dialogue
Gayle Bohlman offers this way of working with parts of the self to understand more clearly what certain parts of the self want and need.  This method offers the opportunity to work directly with inner voices such as the inner critic, the pleaser, and the child.  This provides a way of increasing the aware ego, and expanding awareness while offering greater connection with all of the self.

Yoga Nidra
Yoga Nidra is a meditation practice that offers mindfulness of sensation, thoughts, beliefs, and emotions.  Utilizing this method with either individuals or in a group offers opportunity for self exploration, releasing certain patterns and habits, and spiritual development.  Relaxation occurs as the parasympathetic nervous system is activated, bringing benefits for mind and body.

EMDR
This therapeutic technique was initially developed in 1989 to treat PTSD.   Over the years, EMDR has been successfully used to treat phobias, depression, chronic pain, and addictions among other presenting problems.  The goal of this treatment is to integrate traumatic or upsetting memories with more adaptive information stored in our memory network.  During an EMDR session, the client is asked to vividly recall an upsetting memory while the therapist provides a source of bilateral brain stimulation.  It is believed that the bilateral stimulation decreases the emotional impact of the event and allows the client to think about the memory in a new, more adaptive way.

Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy allows clients to enter a focused yet relaxed state in order to discover and utilize their own skills and strengths to make the changes they desire.  Hypnotherapy has been useful in a number of presenting problems including reducing stress and anxiety, managing pain, increasing confidence, and controlling habits.

Anger Management
This 8-week psycho-educational group training is designed to help men and women gain a better understanding of their habitual patterns of anger and aggression and how destructive patterns can be changed. Our facilitator creates a safe and confidential container for sharing, learning, and healing while supporting group members in designing effective strategies for managing aggression and resolving
conflict.

Imago Groups for Couples (see News and Events for current groups)
Imago Relationship Therapy is based on the best-selling book, Getting the Love You Want, by Harville Hendrix, Ph.D and Helen LaKelly Hunt, Ph.D.  Imago Relationship Therapy focuses on helping couples build and deepen their connection.  Relationship work moves from the individual perspective to the relational perspective by asking, “What does the relationship need from me” as opposed to, “What do I need from the relationship.”  Couples learn a new way of listening and talking-The Imago Dialogue- that supports the couple in establishing safety and trust.  Imago groups are offered in the following formats:

  1. Imago Connects: a free 3-hour workshop that introduces the Imago Relationship theory and the Imago Dialogue.
  2. Start Right Stay Connected: a 4-session premarital workshop for new couples wishing to affirm and clarify their commitment.
  3. Through Conflict to Connection: a 3-session educational program that gives couples an overview of the Imago Dialogue process and helps them learn the skills to understand the source and purpose of conflict in relationships.
  4. Couplehood: A New Way to Love:  a 6-session workshop that teaches the skills and concepts that enable couples to use the obstacles in their relationship so each partner can become his and her best and most loving self.
Women’s Groups
The women’s groups offer members a chance to enhance and deepen their spiritual lives by sharing their experiences with other women.  The Wisdom Circle is a monthly group that focuses on sharing the feminine aspects of growth and development in ways that are particularly attentive to the women’s ways of understanding the world and themselves.

Women’s and Couples Retreats
Offered a couple times a year, these retreats focus on educational and therapeutic topics in a format that promotes relaxation and restoration.

Yoga Classes
The yoga practices of mindfulness, breathwork, postures, and meditation are offered in the class with emphasis for the support these practices offer for stress relief and management of anxiety and meditation.

Speakers Services
Our therapists speak on a wide variety of topics including Couples Communication, Child Development, and Understanding Your Dreams; and are available to community groups.
